The Tropical Dance Orchestra is an ensemble that specialises in Brazilian samba and bossa nova, in particular the music of Antônio Carlos Jobim. Our repertoire also stretches to French and Italian jazz with individual arrangements of popular standards. A 13-piece band, the Tropical Dance Orchestra features five exceptional string players, a tight rhythm section of piano, guitar, bass and drums, an exhilarating front line of flute and trombone, and our fine singers Cherryn Lomas and Mike Ross.
Formed in late 2005, the Tropical Dance Orchestra has performed at Brisbane City Hall, Brisbane Customs House, The University of Queensland School of Music, Broncos Leagues Club, the SunCoast Fest jazz, blues, food and wine Festival, the Brisbane Jazz Club, and for the Coles/Myer Christmas Parade in the Queen Street Mall. In 2007 the Tropical Dance Orchestra released 2 CD/EPs celebrating the music of Antônio Carlos Jobim and Django Reinhardt. A pictorial history of the Tropical Dance Orchestra can be seen on our website at http://www.tropicaldanceorchestra.com.
The Tropical Dance Orchestra's music is as good to listen to as to dance to, and its lush string sound provides a unique experience rarely heard in live performance. We aim to please audiences at all types of events including concert appearances and corporate functions. We can also provide smaller ensembles for weddings and parties including a separate string quartet that can, if required, perform with our rhythm section, front line and vocals.
